This week, Census population numbers were released, showing where and how Maryland’s population changed over the past 10 years. This is the first step down the long road of re-districting, and Republicans made several comments on the gerrymandered mess the current congressional and legislative maps are this week. Check out those and other news and events below.

This week in the news…

Marylanders Call For Fair Redistricting Process

As District 33 Senator Ed Reilly and others emphasized, the current configuration often leaves districts with odd representation.

“Ladies and gentlemen, did you know that Anne Arundel County has more congressional representation than [15] states?” he said. “Twenty years ago, in a political payback, Governor [William Donald] Schaefer, who did not garner a majority of the vote of the citizens in this county, divided the representation that today does not have any one resident from Anne Arundel County representing us on the federal level. … we have over 600,000 residents of this county and we should have an opportunity to have a resident represent us.”

Dueling Commissions Foreshadow Partisan Battle Over Redistricting

“Republicans are skeptical of the General Assembly’s redistricting efforts. Senate Minority Leader Bryan W. Simonaire (R-Anne Arundel County) and House Minority Leader Jason C. Buckel (R-Allegany County), both named as members of the legislative commission, said they were caught off guard by its creation. Simonaire said he believes the commission’s final vote could come down to a party-line split.”

Cecil County Government Will Not Mandate Masks

“Cecil County Executive Danielle Hornberger issued the following statement on mask mandates:

I trust that Cecil County residents know what is best for themselves and their families. With an effective COVID-19 vaccine widely available, the decision of whether to wear a mask should be a personal decision.”
